Welcome to sixth grade math. Although I have taught for 21 years, I see each day as a new challenge. Sixth grade math is fun and exciting for me, and I want to make it that way for my students. In middle school, we are getting away from the basic four operations and learning more complex multi-step problems, algorithms and many pre-algebra ideas. I like to use a variety of different teaching methods in my class to reach all my students because all students learn differently. In class we also use an assortment of manipulatives to provide a concrete example for many abstract ideas. I always show the kids “why” something works to help provide true understanding and real meaning to their learning. It is important that kids understand that the use of mathematics is a life long process and is a natural part of their everyday world. It is my goal to help kids appreciate and understand numbers and at the same time, feel good about themselves.
Although I grew up in Oklahoma, I am a native Texan. I have a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. After freezing and teaching in South Dakota for a few years, I went back to school and got my Master’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in math from the University of North Dakota. All of my teaching experience has been in either 4th, 5th, or 6th grade. I like working with the intermediate and middle school student. As you can see, I think education is a life long process and I never want to stop learning.
